Days 1-2: Hanoi sights, food and coffee

Spend the first two days getting to know Hanoi at a relaxed pace. Start with the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, where many of the city's streets, cafés, restaurants and historic sites are close together. The compact layout makes it easy to walk between different stops without spending much time on transport.

On the second day, visit a few of Hanoi's main cultural attractions, such as the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. Leave part of the afternoon for Vietnamese coffee. Staying in or around the centre also makes it easier to return to your hotel between activities.

Day 3: Ninh Binh day trip and overnight train to Sapa

Leave Hanoi early on Day 3 for Ninh Binh. The train takes around two hours, so you can arrive in the morning and still have most of the day for sightseeing. From Ninh Binh station, use a taxi, Grab or another local transfer to reach the main attractions.

Choose Trang An for a boat trip through the limestone landscape. If you have enough time, continue to Hang Mua for its viewpoint, although the climb involves hundreds of steps. Return to Hanoi in the evening, have dinner and head to the station for the overnight train to Sapa.

Day 4-6: From Sapa villages to the Fansipan Peak

The next three days focus on Sapa's mountain scenery, local villages and Fansipan Peak. The route combines light sightseeing with trekking before returning to Hanoi.

Day 4: Rest and Cat Cat Village

Arrive in Sapa in the morning after the overnight train and keep the first part of the day relatively free. Take some time to check in, have breakfast or rest before heading out again. This slower start is useful after spending the night on the train and helps you save energy for the following days.

In the afternoon, visit Cat Cat Village, which is close to Sapa town and easy to reach by local transfer. The route around the village includes traditional houses, small streams, mountain views and local handicraft shops. After returning to Sapa, keep the evening free for dinner, a short walk around town or an early night.

Day 5: Fansipan Peak

Spend a day visiting Fansipan, the highest mountain in Vietnam. The cable car makes the summit accessible without requiring a full mountain trek, although you still need to walk and climb stairs around the upper station. Allow several hours for the trip so you have enough time to enjoy the views and surrounding mountain scenery.

Weather conditions can change quickly at the summit, and clouds or fog may affect visibility. Check the forecast before leaving Sapa and bring an extra layer because temperatures can be much lower at higher elevations. After visiting Fansipan, return to Sapa and keep the rest of the evening free.

Day 6: Lao Chai Village and back to Hanoi

Spend the morning trekking towards Lao Chai Village in Muong Hoa Valley. The route takes you through rice terraces and mountain scenery, with opportunities to see local houses and everyday village life. A shorter trek is a better choice if you want to leave enough time for the journey back to Hanoi later in the day.

After the trek, return to Sapa to collect your luggage before travelling back to Hanoi. Depending on the schedule, you can take a sleeper bus or shared transfer, while another option is to travel to Lao Cai and continue by overnight train. Try to arrange the connection in advance so you do not lose too much time waiting between services.

Day 7-8: Ha Long Bay: An overnight cruise among limestone islands

From Hanoi, continue to Ha Long Bay for an overnight cruise. The two-day trip combines limestone landscapes, time on the water and a few simple activities.

Day 7: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay and overnight cruise

Leave Hanoi in the morning and travel to Ha Long Bay by shared transfer. Many cruises include a shuttle from Hanoi, which makes the transfer straightforward and avoids the need to arrange separate transport. Check the pick-up location and boarding time carefully because cruise schedules are usually fixed.

Once you board, settle into your cabin and join the afternoon activities. Depending on the cruise, you may go kayaking, visit a cave, swim or stop at one of the limestone islands. Spend the night onboard so you can enjoy the bay after the main day-trip groups have left.

Day 8: Ha Long Bay and return to Hanoi

Start the morning with breakfast onboard before joining the cruise's final activities. Some cruises include a short excursion, while others give guests time to relax on the deck and enjoy the scenery. After returning to the port, collect your luggage and get ready for the journey back to Hanoi.

Take the cruise shuttle or shared transfer back to Hanoi in the afternoon. You will usually have enough time for dinner and a quiet evening after arriving in the city. Since Day 9 is kept free, there is no need to add another major activity to the schedule.

Day 9-10: Hanoi: A relaxed final two days

Return to Hanoi for a free day before your departure. Keep the final two days flexible for shopping, food and any sights you may have missed.

Day 9: Free time in Hanoi

Keep Day 9 flexible after several days of travelling between destinations. Use the extra time to try some Hanoi dishes that may not have been included earlier, such as bun cha, pho, banh cuon, xoi xeo or cha ca.

This free day also gives the itinerary some breathing room if an earlier transfer or cruise runs late. There is no need to plan a full sightseeing schedule, especially after the overnight cruise and several days of travelling. If you prefer a slower day, use the time to buy souvenirs, organise your luggage and enjoy one final meal in Hanoi before departure.

Day 10: Departure from Hanoi

Keep the final morning free for breakfast, last-minute shopping or a short walk near your accommodation. Avoid planning any major sightseeing because you will need to leave enough time for the airport transfer. Your departure time will determine how much free time you actually have on the final day.

For flights from Noi Bai International Airport, allow extra time for the journey from central Hanoi, particularly during busy traffic periods. If you are travelling internationally, arrive at the airport with enough time for check-in and immigration. Once you leave Hanoi, the 10-day North Vietnam itinerary comes to an end.

How to make this 10-day route easier without a car

This route includes several long transfers, so transport should be organised before the trip. Book the Hanoi-Ninh Binh train or transfer, the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa, transport from Sapa back to Hanoi, and the Ha Long Bay cruise in advance. For the Sapa-Hanoi journey, check the departure time carefully so you have enough time after visiting Lao Chai Village.

Keep your luggage practical for frequent transfers. A small daypack is useful for the overnight train and day trips, while your main luggage can stay at your accommodation when you only need essentials for a short outing. Comfortable shoes are important for Ninh Binh and Sapa, while a waterproof or warm layer is useful in the northern mountains.

Do not overload each destination with extra attractions. Hanoi and Ninh Binh can be explored independently, while Sapa already has a full schedule with Cat Cat Village, Fansipan Peak and Lao Chai Village. The overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay also saves time because accommodation, transport around the bay and activities are combined.

If you want a slower 10 days in North Vietnam, keep the free time in Hanoi rather than adding another destination. This gives you more time to rest between transfers and allows some flexibility if the overnight train, Sapa transfer or Ha Long Bay cruise runs behind schedule.

Is 10 days enough for North Vietnam without a car?

Yes, 10 days is enough to visit several major destinations in North Vietnam without renting a car, although this itinerary still involves a number of long journeys. The route covers Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Long Bay, with Hanoi used as the main base between some destinations.

The most demanding travel sections are the Hanoi-Ninh Binh-Hanoi day trip followed by the overnight train to Sapa, and the journey from Sapa back to Hanoi after visiting Lao Chai Village. Treat these as transfer-heavy parts of the itinerary rather than trying to add too many extra activities. Sapa also requires more physical energy because of the walks around Cat Cat Village, Fansipan and Lao Chai.

If this pace feels too fast, use Day 9 in Hanoi as a genuine rest day rather than adding another destination. You can also shorten the Ninh Binh day trip by choosing fewer attractions or leaving more time between your Sapa activities.

For a slower 10 days in North Vietnam, spend more time in Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Sapa instead of adding another destination. The main advantage of this route is that you can experience the mountains and Ha Long Bay without spending additional days on long cross-region transfers.
