The ghostly islands rising from the water are mainly made from limestone and are the result of the water level rising and lowering over the centuries, forming a karst. The process of erosion and weathering formed the karsts of Halong Bay into the unique shapes you see today. In 2000, UNESCO recognized Halong Bay as a World Heritage Site for the second time because of its geographical and geomorphologic values. Many of the islands in Halong Bay are, in fact, hollow and contain fabulous caves or grottoes. You will visit Thien Cung and Sung Sot Cave, or "Surprise Grotto," on Bo Hon Island.
